The first week of February is Children’s Authors and Illustrators Week!
As a children’s book author, I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to celebrate the occasion.
So…
In honor of this week, I wanted to take a trip down memory lane with you and share some of my favorite children’s authors and books.
I’m told that I loved The Giving Tree as a child. It is a great story, but what I remember loving even more were the zany, intriguing poems and illustrations of A Light in the Attic. I currently own both of those books, along with Where the Sidewalk Ends, and I love reading the poems with my nephews. One of their favorites is “The Toy Eater.”

I fell in love with this story when I was a kid. Two kids run away from home – to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They hide away in the museum, and end up working on solving a mystery. What’s not to love? And yes, it made me want to hide overnight in a public place and live there for a few days. But I had my sights on the mall or Walmart, which I thought would be easier for me to pull off. (No, it never happened.)
Growing up, I was blessed to have my grandmother nearby. She not only lived in the same town, but, for many years, she lived just one block away. I have fond memories of her reading to me and my sister when we were young. I specifically remember her reading Winnie the Pooh, so now that book has a special place in my heart. I honestly don’t even remember what happens in the story. I just remember the time with Grammie and that she was willing to read to us.
Of course, Patch is now one of my favorite children’s book characters. He was drawn by talented illustrator De Carso Carroll Sr.
If you haven’t met Patch yet, check out his adventure – it’s cute and fun! And it’s gotten some great reviews!
Lastly, if you haven’t discovered how many dinosaurs might be in your closet, don’t miss this one.
“This book is one that the grandkids want to read over and over. It also helps reinforce counting forward and backward. Great fun to count along and guess the next number by the rhymes in the story.” – Kim
